Protecting Your Pipes

I did a little research on different products and found one of the best and most inexpensive item was an inline eletrical heater.  This is actually a roof De-icing Cable and can be found at Home Depot, Lowe’s and other home improvement centers.   Cost is around $50.00 and for the money is one of the best and cheapest insurance one can get.  You simply wrap the cord around the exposed pipes and plug it it.  It has a small thermostat that turns the unit on when the temperature gets to about 34.

If you use this product along with a good insulating wrap, I think that you’ll be well protected against freezing weather and prevent your pipes from freezing.  Besides, no one wants to be out in the cold dealing with busted pipes.  So do a little prevention and you’ll be sitting by the fire all toasty and wahtching the football game knowing that your pipes are protected.

That’s a great idea! Are there shorter lengths of the heater cords I can use for smaller areas of exposed pipe?

I searched the Home Depot website and found that they show the RC60 as being the shortest. They come in 60, 80 and 100 foot lenghts. However, I have seen them in Lowe’s and Home Depot as short as 5 feet. You may wish check out your local home improvment store to see what they have available. You can use the longer ones and just double wrap the pipes if you can’t find the exact size you need. I hope this helps you and if I can answer anymore questions, please send me a note.
